Down Syndrome Awareness Month – October 30, 2025

Did you know? Some people with Down syndrome write or copy letters, words, or sentences repetitiously to relax, manage stress, and/or process their day.
Many individuals with Down syndrome and their families have shared with us that they often write or copy letters, words, and sentences repetitiously. Some examples we have heard include:
- writing the names of favorite superheroes
- writing lines from movies
- copying sentences from books
- writing various letters that do not form words
In this Routines Involving Writing or Copying article, Brian Chicoine, MD, explains how this routine can be beneficial and discusses when it may be an indication of a problem or stressor in the life of an individual with Down syndrome.
