Down Syndrome Awareness Month – October 1, 2025

Did you know? Many people with Down syndrome share common characteristics but each person is unique.
There is a saying in the Down syndrome community – If you have met one person with Down syndrome…you have met one person with Down syndrome! There are certainly similarities among people with Down syndrome in terms of health and behavioral characteristics such as the “Groove” and self-talk. However, each person with Down syndrome is unique, and similarities should serve as a guidebook, not a rule book. What is best for one person may not be best for another. Understanding commonalities while at the same time appreciating unique characteristics are both important aspects of our approach to supporting individuals with Down syndrome in their health journeys.
More information is available in this Common Characteristics article by Brian Chicoine, MD.
